Thanks, QMUL!

Our official Mobile Incitement residency at Queen Mary uni is over, though we’ll be working with Ali Campbell and some of his students again after Easter as we share the work at Poplar Union and possibly also back on campus. We had a great time, and the student ‘think tank’ has given us loads of great ideas, which we’ll be digesting and testing over the coming months, as we and The Black Smock Band plot how to take our revolution nationwide!

Big thanks to Ali and his students, to everyone at QMUL that helped make it happen, to our lovely audience yesterday, to the various organisations who’ve supported us so far, not least Ovalhouse, and all the generous community members who came to our tea parties and shared their stories and their wisdom!

Needed: your knowledge of Tower Hamlets!

Mobile Incitement is a new project run by local theatre company Daedalus and folk musicians The Black Smock Band. Combining live music, songs, performance and visual art, we explore the history of protest and our desire for change.

Over 60? Living in or closely linked to Tower Hamlets? Interested in history, protest, theatre or folk music? We want to hear from you!

We are currently working with students from Queen Mary University of London to test out some ideas and create a special Tower Hamlets version of the piece. Anti-racism or anti-fascist protests, housing issues, protecting LGBT spaces, preserving our green spaces…. or simply surviving the everyday challenges of this much-loved but complex and sometimes divided borough. There’s a lot to talk about.

We need people with a few decades’ experience of life in the borough to join us* to volunteer their knowledge and help shape the project.

*Tea included!

Please register your interest now with the form below.

DATES: Thursday 1st, 8th and 15th February

TIMES: 2:30-4:30pm

LOCATION: Queen Mary University, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS

Ideally you’d come to all three sessions but even if you can only make one or two we’d love to hear from you.

A Season of Bangla Drama – photos

We’re so pleased to have been a part of this year’s A Season of Bangla Drama. It was a fantastic month and, as ever, proved that art can be open and inclusive at the same time as being ambitious.

Here are some photos by Rehan Jamil of our East storytelling performance at Rich Mix London, which we produced in association with BSK.

You can see the whole album of photos from the rest of the season here.

Rehearsing for East

Here are some photos from rehearsals for East’s next performance, an evening of songs and stories from people living, working or otherwise connected to East London. It’s going to be a lovely night and we hope to see you there! 10th Nov, Rich Mix at 7pm, as part of A Season of Bangla Drama.

A Season of Bangla Drama 2017 Sharing Day

Some of the group from East – the storytelling group we run in partnership with BSK – joined other theatre companies from A Season of Bangla Drama 2017 yesterday, to get to know each other and see extracts of work in progress. It was a great day and a great chance to meet some very lovely and talented people!

East will be performing at Rich Mix on Nov 10th at 7pm. More info here: https://www.richmix.org.uk/events/theatre/east

London Borough of Culture (fingers crossed)

Tower Hamlets is bidding to be London Borough of Culture in 2019 or 2020. This is really exciting. It’d be amazing if we get it but, even if we don’t, the work going into the bid will still be beneficial. Already, it’s created new networks in the borough, the research results will be really helpful, and there’ll be some exciting projects that emerge from it. On the other hand, we might win!

Anyway, Daedalus has contributed to the research and general knocking around of ideas, but the bid team also need to hear from individuals in the borough. Please do your bit by completing their survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TPMPMBW

Thanks!

A Report on Silk River

As Kinetika’s incredible Silk River project moves on to Greenwich, here’s a blog about yesterday’s events, for which we advised on music and facilitated the involvement of The Black Smock Band. The band supported young people from A Team Arts in their street performances as the Silk River walk passed through Tower Hamlets.

Here’s a photo of the band in action (credit Payam Torabi).

Silk River

We’re excited to be part of Kinetica’s Silk River Project, linking the Thames with the Hooghly River in India in an international celebration of the silk trade. We’ll working with our regular collaborators The Black Smock Band to support young people from Tower Hamlets’ A Team Arts with street performances as the project passes through the borough tomorrow.

A Great Day Out

We’re back in Victoria Park again this Sat…

Specifically, we’re proud to present, in conjunction with BSK, storytelling this Sat, with two amazing tellers: Sef Townsend and Alia Alzougbi. It’s part of LBTH’s A Great Day Out, and of the East Storytelling project. Look out for the storytelling tent. It’s all happening near the bandstand in the East part of the park.

Come along!
